MY Stella repro. I actually started out to give this a nice warm amber glow but I got a bit carried away. It has just one coat of Behlins Rock Hard varnish with several more to come.

John that is so purty! I love the old timey look with the wide purfling lines and the whole purple heart thing. I have forgotten what wood you used for the back. Oh yes, english oak or some such wood. Just great. I want it, I don't care how it sounds. 
I even love that green label inside.

Thanks guys John, Yes it is english brown oak, which I'm told is a white oak with some kind of fungus. Steve, I used a waterbased gel stain rubbed on for the amber base coat and then airbrushed on red solarlux followed by the red solarlux again with quite a bit of stewmac brown liquid die added in. I also shaded around the back and sides just a little but you really can't tell much from the pics. It was applied directly to the unsealed wood because I want it to act like stain and not cover the grain like it does when you tint the actual finish. |

Solar-lux is a behlin product. A stain that os very thin in viscousity so I use an airbrush to apply it. It is compatible with just about any finish I think although I think some finishes especialy schellac or any alcohol base will cause it to bleed. |

John, I don't usually post comments on "how guitars look"...everyone sort of expects praise and usually gets a lot of just that. But man...That really is a beautiful finish and guitar! you state that the finish is "varnish" did you spray or use a brush? Really Beautiful!

Thank you all mucho, This little guy has been a hoot to build and there. It has a flat top and I'm seeing a lot of advantages to building flat. John, I did tape off the purflings on the top with some very fine automotive striping tape and it saved a lot of time though I still had a little scraping to do on them. The binding, I just scraped with a razorblade after staining. David, This is Behlens rockhard and I am spraying it on. I tried brushing and while it works, spraying is much easier and more controlable for me. I thin an eight ounce batch with 2 capfulls of Behlens reducer and one cap full of acetone to aid in adhesion between layers. Bob, I'll get you some good pics when it's finished but for now you can left click and save these if you want them. |
